Introduction
Hampi is a small village on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra river in Bellary district of Karnataka. It is located within the ruins of Vajanagara, the former capital of Vijayanagara Empire. A well known pilgrimage centre, it has been identified by some with the mythical Kishkindha kshetra of hindu epic Ramayana. In past, it was famed for its magnificence and for promotion of art and culture. Today Hampi covers an area of about 26 sq.kms. on the southern bank of the river Tungabhadra. It is about 355kms from Bangalore cityand 75kms from Bellary.
